Real Harley Old School Chopper
Personally Owned & Built by Ed Roman in 1975

Ed Roman the former owner of SMC Choppers, SMC Acu-weld, Roman Mfg & V Twin Cycles.

In the late 60's Ed Roman was probably the first Chopper shop on the East Coast building wild motorcycles. Years before the Yuppies and Ice Cream Bikers !!!

Orange County Cycles, Arlen Ness & The rest of the geniuses who followed in his footsteps, Ed was creating Captain America Motorcycles & manufacturing Super extended front ends.  Ed Roman is probably one of the 3 or 4 people responsible for creating the old school chopper personae. Ed & his trusty sidekick & head mechanic M. Kellogg Hays were miles ahead of the curve at the time.

By 1970, Ed had built up a large manufacturing company known as SMC Acu-weld.  Ed & Junior Partners Barry Ferency & Ronald Thiesse operated 5 custom shops and a 61,000 square foot factory where they manufactured & distributed custom accessories for Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

In 1972 they employed 88 people and ran a National sales force of 9 or 10 salesman who covered the entire USA looking for custom shops and motorcycle shops to carry their line of Accessories. This Venture was extremely successful for a number of years until Ed left the company to get back into his first love (The Music Business).

After Ed left the company The company went bankrupt within a year.  Seeing a golden opportunity Ed purchased most of the company back at the Auction and proceeded to sell it off a little at a time to an enterprising fellow by the name of Ted Doering in Newburgh NY.  It took several years for Ed to sell off the remaining entity to Ted Doering and during that time Ed started to become interested in building high quality guitars.  See  http://www.edromanguitars.com

Today Ted Doering owns and runs the highly successful V Twin Cycles, Ted's operation inhabits a million square feet and is known worldwide as one of the premiere Harley parts operations in the world.

I have owned this bike for more than 30 years, I said I would never sell it but we all get old someday.

Even with the long front end this bike handles real well. The secret is the short handlebars on the heavy risers.

This bike will turn tighter than my stock Full dress Harley and I believe it to be more comfortable.  (Although my wife will argue that with me)

The Tranny is completely chrome plated and has been recently rebuilt. The bike has lots of hard miles but the motor runs great.

Even the motor block is fully chrome plated (Though it's seen better days) When this bike is cleaned and detailed it is very presentable and always draws a gaggle of geeks and sidewalk commando's who will tell you about how their friend or uncle once owned a Harley.

This bike has never let me down and I hate to sell it but I injured myself in a car accident and I have to make the supreme sacrifice.

The bike is due for a complete rebuild, but I am confident that it will run great for several more  seasons.

This is the only chopper I have ever seen with a stereo system on it...  (Gotta have my tunes) JBL Speakers with a small preamp system.  Plug in an Ipod and your ready to go !!!!  (Surprisingly Loud)

The Girder is a rare Smith Bros & Fetrow and it works really well. The handling will surprise even the biggest skeptics.  There are no fork stops so the bike is capable of amazing U turns. I have built over 1000 bikes in my lifetime and I have only built myself three the first one got stolen the second one is still on the road in Hartford CT.   (30" Over Springer with a molded coffin tank and two Linkert Carbs sticking out of the left side of the bike. This was the last one and the best one,   I have owned it for more than 30 years.

I will  consider trades for guitars, guns or a custom trike.
